More searches were conducted by European internet users in August than their North American counterparts, it has been revealed.

Figures compiled by industry analyst comScore show that 18 billion searches were carried out by 210 million individuals in Europe.

This compares with 16 billion queries from 206 million North American users, the organisation claims.

In all, more than 61 billion searches were carried out worldwide over the course of the month.

"With the tremendous volume of search activity occurring around the world, search continues to present an abundance of marketing opportunities to companies on both a global and local scale," observes executive vice-president of international markets Bob Ivins.

Some 95 per cent of the worldwide internet audience - or all those over the age of 15 - made an average of 80 search engine queries per person in August, comScore asserts.

The firm recently announced that the UK leads its European neighbours in terms of engagement with social media websites.
