Users of Google's Webmaster Central service can now find out how many people are subscribed to their RSS feeds, it has emerged.

RSS - commonly known as standing for Really Simple Syndication - is a means of sending news content to subscribers without them having to visit the website from which the information originates.

The reporting software now includes a function to highlight the number of times a news feed has been accessed via Google's newsreaders such as Google Reader, the search engine advises.

In an Official Google Webmaster Central blog post, Webmaster Tools team member Liza Ma comments: "We hope this will make it easier to track subscriber statistics across multiple feeds, as well as offer an improvement over parsing through server logs for feed information."

Google provides instructions for webmasters looking to encourage users to subscribe via one of the search engine's newsreaders on how to add a button to their news page allowing this to be done with a single click.

Ms Ma notes a number of other minor changes to the Webmaster Central interface, including a 'breadcrumbs' text navigation hierarchy at the top of each page.
