Is Google's Adsense program a good thing? Well, if you believe the gurus' it is, it is an easy way to pull in money for little or no effort, just load up a web site and sit back and get rich. Simple. The adsense program rewards publishers or web site owners for giving up real estate on their web pages for Google's customers to place their advertisements, if someone takes action, i.e. clicks on an advert the web site owner gets paid. The correlation between what Google charges their customers and what Google pays the publisher is a carefully guarded secret and yet many, many 'gurus' tell you that their 'secret' formula works out a close approximation to ensure that you will bring in the money.OK same old, same old if there's a buck to be made someone should be making it. Preferably me, ha ha.

The idea behind Adsense is sound and for some people it is obviously profitable, so we should be happy. Take a web site off the shelf and buy a domain name, pay for a hosting account and away you go. Instant money, except for the vast majority of web masters who earn little or nothing. Why is this? The answer is simple and plain to see if you know where to look. If you browse to any web site, pretty or dull you can still click 'view' and 'source' and see the html that makes that page. It can look a complete jumble of unintelligible nonsense but there is, towards the top, a clue as to why most of these pages make no money. In the source code is a statement in plain English, it says "

What seems obvious is that the poor sap who is laying out their hard earned cash on hosting, domain registration and sometimes even the 'Adsense Template' fails to grasp the fundamental idea behind the web, they hear it's easy to earn a fortune on the internet and hello, here's Mr Wallet. Unfortunately what they are doing is unconsciously hoisting themselves by their own petard as the only thing they are achieving is providing one way links back to the author of the template or 'Adsense Site' via the 'Powered By" link hiding at the bottom of the page. Thus helping that author in his quest for better rankings.

So, what is the fundamental idea? The answer once again is that statement Keywords. I think 'search terms' would be a better name as the keywords are in fact the words people enter when they search Google or any of the search engines. If you have a page which includes these search terms in the meta tag you have a far better chance of your page being served up by Google, Yahoo or whichever search engine you use. Of course there is more to it than that but you have to start somewhere.
